What is your name?

July 27, 2022

What is your name? I met a young woman as I entered the door of a surgical Center a few weeks ago to have cataract surgery. She was the greeter and did the preliminary screening. She took my temperature and asked to see my ID etcetera. I asked her what her name was, and she said, “It is Samantha or Sam it doesn’t matter to me.” It does matter a great deal. What do you want to be called? You are the person who is going to make your name wonderful or just plain crummy. You are giving your name its identity as your name is identifying you. Be proud of your name say it like you were a queen and wear it royally. If you want to be called Samantha, say with pride, my name is Samantha. If you want me to know you as Sam, say my name is Sam. Say your name with the spirit it was given to you. Stand up and be counted as a woman who loves being who she is, and a woman who wants you to remember her and her name. Today, if I am fortunate enough to see Samantha or Sam smiling as I walk through the door to have my second cataract surgery, I will again ask her what her name is. When we first met, I told her to choose which name she wanted to be called, don’t give people a choice. I wonder how she will respond to the question today. I will never see Samantha or Sam again, because we are but ships passing in the night, but my dear Samantha or Sam I will remember your name. I will hope you have a new appreciation of what a wonderful name it is, because it is your name, and you will hopefully wear it with pride into your future. Thank you for making the day better for people as they walk through the door. You are super! I just wanted you to know you made a difference in my day two weeks ago and you are continually influencing each person as they walk through the door and see your smiling face. Have a most marvelous day and be happy because happiness is a choice.
